DESIGNED WITH RETRO MATCHBOOK ART
While in Japan, I stumbled into a tiny antique shop in Kappabashi, an obscure district of Tokyo. My eyes were immediately drawn to this handmade book, filled with matchbook covers from various Tokyo bars, collected in the 1960s.
Some of the matchbook art resembled prescription labels-- which gave me the idea to make a series of designer medicine vials. Each piece features a forgotten illustration, advertising a bar or a lounge used to escape post war.
I added pieces of actual receipts from my trip, to play into the sometimes abused nature of prescription drugs.
Each vial uses the original matchbook art, first sprayed with clear protectant to prevent wear.
